type='text'>DaedhirUI 3.2 released.

Get it while it's hot, folks.

Here ya go.

As I mentioned in the last post, I may not be doing much updating of the UI in the future. The Good News is that the Curse client seems to be working pretty well lately for this stuff. There are only a few addons that give problems, mainly due to the way some authors do their profile configuration.

You know how some addons will have a separate profile for each toon, which takes its configuration from a default profile that you can't configure? Yeah, I hate that. Turns out it's an issue with AceDB, and one of the options for calling it.

For example, in my addon FreeYourResources, there's this line of code that sets up the configuration database:

 self.db = LibStub("AceDB-3.0"):New("FreeYourResourcesDB", defaults, true)

That last function argument, the "true" in the parentheses, tells AceDB to load the addon with the default profile. This allows you to configure the default profile on one toon, and then it's loaded automatically for every other toon you load up.

Some authors leave off this "true" argument, and that makes it so that the addon author's defaults, not yours, are the ones that are loaded for each toon. So you either have to copy a profile from a toon where you've configured it, or reconfigure the whole thing from scratch. This is why I was using Reflux in previous versions, but now hopefully that step isn't necessary anymore.

So I've added that "true" argument to some of the addons to make it easier. SexyMap, SCT, ClassTimer, and a few others.

So when the Curse updater tells you an addon's modified, that's why.

Well, I've also done some aesthetic stuff to Dominos. I may ask Tuller if he'll merge my changes. I like 'em. :)

Anyway, there it is. Sorry it took so insanely long, but as I said, life has been pretty weird for me lately.

If anybody's interested in taking over maintenance of this beast, lemme know. We can talk about it.
<img width='1' height='1' been playing WoW much lately. But I'm working on getting an update of the UI going so that I can get it to you guys.

I know that some of the addons have been updated so they don't work in the current version that's on WoWInterface. But I have most of the UI working in 4.3, and I'm just waiting on an update for Auctioneer before I post the update.

I know many of you have probably given up on me, and I don't blame you. But I will have a UI update posted within the next week.

FYI, I'm going to be playing The Old Republic when it comes out, so I don't know how much I'll be keeping up with the UI after this upcoming update. I'm also trying to get my Ph.D. finished up this spring, which requires lots of time and work. But I plan to keep raiding Wednesday nights with my guild, so I'll do what I can.
DaedhirUI 3.1 released

Hey, everybody. With the new patch (4.0.6) I figured I should give you guys an update. Usual caveats apply, back up your stuff, probably do a clean install, don't blame me if the light bulb in the lamp on your desk bursts into flames, etc.

Get it here.

I added some nice border textures for buttons and tooltips, and I moved the bag bar and menu buttons so that they don't clash with the Blizzard raid panel. I lead some of my guild's raids, and I just found that the new Blizzard raid panel is good stuff, even with Grid. I just hide the Blizzard raid frames but keep the panel with all of the world markers, role check button and that kinda stuff.

Enjoy, and let me know if something doesn't work.

Oh, and I do know that Round3DPortraits is throwing some taint errors. It's on my todo list, but so is submitting my thesis proposal for my Ph.D. some of the crucial addons that were missing. We have our trade skill window back now, and I've included a new auction addon, Auctionator. I like it so far.
<br away. :) I'll post links to my addons (I've written three now!) once this one's been approved.

DaedhirUI 3.0 released.

I've been spending some time tweaking the UI and improving the graphics, and things really started coming together once I was able to get into the beta. I've been working on some addons of my own lately, one of which I'm including in the UI -- it's a mod that makes nice round 3D portraits for the player and target frames, and has some extra functionality that the default unit frames have -- an icon that denotes combat or resting, and the character's level. They also let you know if your toon has any debuffs that you can dispel by putting a small icon over the area where the player's level usually is. It's called Round3DPortraits.

I've really been having fun playing with the UI in the Cataclysm beta, and I hope you enjoy the changes now that the Big Patch™ is here. ;) Without further ado...

DaedhirUI 3.0 for World of Warcraft 4.0.1 is now available.

It works with the patch that's coming out today, and will work with the Cataclysm expansion.

I'll try to issue a maintenance release with updated addons as they come in. Once the patches hit the developers usually try to make more time to update their addons, so it shouldn't take too long.

Please read the enclosed documentation as usual, and as with any major UI release, I recommend reinstalling the UI. It's been a while since I've had much time to mess with the UI, since I've been busy with the whole grad school thing. But I'm working on updating the UI to work with the latest patch.

It's usually a little while before addon authors have their stuff updated, so I'll be replacing and testing each module of the UI. I don't want to upload a partially functional or buggy compilation for you guys, so in the mean time I recommend you go to wowinterface.com and curse.com to update the addons that are giving you trouble.

There's a reason I include BugSack with the UI. ;)

Cheers, and I'll update when I have something close to a finished product for the next release.

Possible issues with 3.3.3

I loaded up my UI in the new patch, 3.3.3, and noticed that all of the panel artwork was screwed up. So I went in and downloaded the latest version of kgPanels from wow.curse.com and installed it.

This seems to have solved the panel issue. So I'd recommend that everybody update the kgPanels folders in Interface/AddOns by downloading the latest version from curse.com or wowace.com.

Everything else seems to work. I have not forgotten about you guys. I'm just waiting on a couple of updates to make the UI completely stable, and I'll get it out to you guys. But here's a preview of some new features:

Easier setup! Remember going through all of the addons and clicking on the "Default" profile? No more of that!

Slimmed down memory footprint! I've dumped a couple of addons, particularly Lightheaded and ItemRack, since Blizzard's implementation of the quest tracking features and the equipment manager are now robust and full-featured enough to replace them.

Tight integration with Blizzard art! The preview pictures posted below are very similar to what I'll have in the release version, with a bit more polish.

So I should have the newest version of the UI ready sometime within the next week or so. The functionality is almost identical to what it was.

The UI, as you can now download it, has a fairly self-consistent and minimalistic look. I definitely liked it for a long time. But I kept finding that I wished that my UI looked more consistent with the default UI. You can have slick and modern unit frames and action bars, but as soon as you open up the character frame, the quest log, or one of the other default frames you see that it's not consistent.

So I took a bunch of the original Blizzard textures and used them to create the artwork for my preferred layout. This involved making backgrounds for the center console area and overlay artwork for the unit frames. I think I've come up with a really nice way to keep the layout I like while keeping the look consistent with the Blizzard default UI. Basically, it's the WoW look, but without the flaws in the default UI layout. :)

I'm posting a screenshot to see what you guys think. I really dig it, and I hope you do too. Let me know how it strikes you. There's more to the new layout than you can see in the screenshot. Particularly, I think I've finally figured out a way to make pet classes look really nice. If you guys want, I can upload more screenshots later so that you can see things in action. Tell me what you'd like to see, and I'll try to oblige.

The screenshot is clickable for a larger view, FYI.

DaedhirUI 1.3 released

DaedhirUI 1.3 for World of Warcraft 1.2.

I finally got around to finishing the update. I have the UI back in a semi-working state, and as soon as I get everything back working with no errors, I'll publish a new version of the UI.

I get the impression that many of the mod developers didn't have much time to do testing on the PTR (and neither did I for that matter) so we may wait a little while for this one. I can tell you, though, that you can update Pitbull, kgpanels, Dominos, and FuBar and you'll get most of the stuff back working that you'll need for a functional raid UI.

And don't forget to check "load out of date addons" on the mod selection screen before you log in.

Enjoy the patch, and I'll update whenever I can.

A Question

I haven't made many major design changes to my UI in quite a while now. When I first started putting different addons together, I made fairly major, sweeping changes quite often. I would discover that a certain addon would interfere with my playing space too much, or it took too much computing time and robbed me of game performance, or it simply wasn't what I was looking for. After a lot of trial and error I finally ended up with the UI that's currently available.

I find that it meets my needs very well. However, I'm sure there are some improvements that could be made. So I'm wondering if any of you have downloaded my UI and made significant changes to make it more useful for you. If you have, I'd love to see a screenshot of what you've done and an explanation of why you decided to do it -- what need my UI didn't fill that your addition does.

The thing that has been bothering me the most about my UI recently is the hoops you have to jump through to configure the addons when you create a new character. Many of the addons handle configuration well by initializing with the default profile you've optimized on your other toons. But a few of them don't do this, and create a new profile for each new toon from their own defaults. The result? When you make a new toon, your stuff is all over the place. You have to configure the addons to use the default profiles. Is it a hassle? You bet.

So I'm looking into how to make this change. It would also considerably shorten the installation instructions for the UI. When writing them, I was fully aware that many people would read the first sentences and say "Well, forget this. I'll find a UI that's easier to install." I'd like to improve this, and I think fixing the profiles issue would be a good first step.

There is a problem though. In my original UI, I had modified a couple of addons myself, and this obviously causes issues for maintenance. It delayed the next release of the UI too, since I had to either modify the addons again in order to get any updates the authors had made or find another addon that restored the functionality but didn't require any modification by me.

So if I decide to fix the addons to do the defaults in an intelligent way, I will also have the added task of backporting the changes I make to any new releases of the addons when future patches hit. I'm not certain this is the way to go.

So again, please let me know what you think could be improved on the UI. And I hope some people are enjoying it.

DaedhirUI 1.1 released.

I've uploaded DaedhirUI 1.1 to WoWInterface. The file might be pending for a few hours, keep checking back until the new download appears.

Get it here.

It's still got some issues, mainly in 25-man raiding. I'm not sure what to do about that, although I've read that the Buffalo version I'm using is causing some major lag on some people's systems. If you're having framerate issues in 25-man raids, I'd suggest trying to disable Buffalo and/or ZMobDB and ZuxanaModelCitizen to see if that helps.

This will be the last release of the UI until the 3.1 patch comes out. I have a (mostly) working version of the UI on the PTR currently, although I'm waiting on a few library updates. I'm also trying to reduce the number of addons the UI uses, since it's become kinda bloated and unwieldy to maintain. My goal for 3.1 (DaedhirUI version 2.0) is to make a lightweight framework to provide the main functionality of the UI including graphics and layout. This framework will be the bare essentials, and any other addons you might want to add to it will likely be easier to deal with.

I'll give more info on this when I have it, I hope to have the light UI ready type='text'>

Okay, I'm really sorry I haven't gotten a new version up in a while. Been busy in RL, and the time I have to play is pretty much devoted to raiding.

I'll try to get a new package up this weekend. There still aren't a whole lot of changes to the UI, and I'm currently working on getting it up and running (with stability) on the PTR so that we'll have a hot, fresh UI working for 3.1 on release of the patch. There are still some bugs on that front, as not a lot of addon developers seem to be messing with the PTR yet. I'm hoping and assuming that this will happen soon.

I'm also trying to pare down the UI into its most essential elements. I kept getting complaints from people that the UI makes things slow down too much, so I'm trying to minimize the number of addons in the UI package by default. This will give everybody the essentials (and the layouts, graphics, etc.) but will allow people to add whatever other utility addons they might need.

Again, really sorry to those of you who are waiting for an updated version. I even had somebody come find me in game to ask me to do this. (Wow.) This is just a hobby of mine, but I'll try to be better about updates.

Update coming for 3.0.8

I plan to have an updated version of the UI ready for when Blizzard releases the 3.0.8 patch. Auctioneer still hasn't updated their addon, but I found a hack for including the database from the development version in the release version, which provides vendor prices for all of the Northrend items.

Not a whole lot of changes to the UI will be included, since most of the AddOns still seem to work fine. I've been playing with a couple of other addons, like ArkInventory, but I don't think I'm actually going to be adding them in.. I'm having a memory issue with WoW that causes a crash if I'm in a zone with too much information, it seems to have something to do with the amount of memory allocated by the WoW client, which includes AddOns. So I'm trying to keep things a bit minimalistic, although when you have a UI as complicated as this one, it's not an easy task.

Sorry again for the delay in an updated version, there just aren't enough changes to justify getting it out and having to reissue for the new patch.

An update on updates.

I know a fair number of people are waiting on an update of the UI. Fact is, there are few addons I'm missing at the moment in order to update, and there have been good changes to a lot of them. I'm only waiting at the moment on an update from the Auctioneer folks that will contain the WoWhead info pertaining to vendor prices and such. For the moment, I have another addon that provides this, and if Auctioneer isn't updated by the time the new patch (3.0.7, on the PTR as of today) is out, I'll include the current stable version of Auctioneer along with this other addon, SellFish.

I have not forgotten about you guys, nor will I. :)

DaedhirUI 1.0 Released!

Get it here.

Everything should be working, please let me know if it's not by posting in the comments section.

From now on, I won't be checking the comments threads in the posts older than this one, since the release is finally out. So if you have trouble or questions, comment on this post or any later one. Check the old ones for answers to your questions, though, as they might have been previously answered.

I've now included fairly detailed instructions for getting it working in the package. See READMEFIRST.TXT, INSTALL.TXT, and CONFIG.TXT for details.

Anybody who gets it working, if you wouldn't mind posting a link to an imageshack.us image or something similar, I'd appreciate it. I want to see what you all do with this thing.

A word on fonts

As I've posted, I can't really distribute the fonts I use with my UI pack, since I don't have the copyright privilege to do so. But If you, like me, are not particularly fond of Blizzard's font choices, you can replace the default fonts with whatever fonts you like, as long as they are truetype.

The way to do this is very simple, and yet isn't very well publicized.

First, go into your World of Warcraft folder, wherever that might be. This is the same folder that contains the Interface and WTF folders. Then create a folder called Fonts. What next?

Well, first, a word about the fonts Blizzard uses.

The main font that Blizzard uses in World of Warcraft is called Friz Quadrata. You find this on most of the default UI elements. The second font is Arial Narrow. This is the font that you'll find on things like the username and password fields on the login window. The third main font is Morpheus, which is the font that's used for quest titles in the quest log and for in game mail. Finally, theres Skurri, which is used for the damage text on the default unit frames and such.

To replace these fonts, you simply have to choose a font to replace them and copy those fonts to the World of Warcraft/Fonts directory. You will then have to rename them to replace the default fonts. Here are the file names you need:

Friz Quadrata -- rename your replacement FRIZQT__.ttf

Arial Narrow -- rename your replacement ARIALN.ttf

Morpheus -- rename your replacement MORPHEUS.ttf

Skurri -- rename your replacement skurri.TTF

I don't know if the file names are case sensitive, but I can vouch that naming them the way I wrote does work.

There are lots of nice fonts out there. I use a couple of variations on the Myriad font set by Adobe. These are gorgeous fonts, but not freely available. You can buy them from Adobe if you like them. There are lots of free fonts available all over the web, and I'd recommend trying a few out in game to see how they can change the look and feel of your UI.

Some particular recommendations now. For replacement of Friz Quadrata as the main game font, if you run Windows Vista, you should have a font called Calibri available in your Windows/Fonts folder. I like the Calibri Bold font for this purpose. You can simply copy the font file (calibrib.ttf) to World of Warcraft/Fonts and rename it FRIZQT__.ttf. I like the freely available Black Chancery font for Morpheus replacement. Arial Narrow has been tough to find a good free replacement for, but any decent condensed font should do well. Just test a few out. For Skurri, I like another freely available font called Ever After. I also use this font for my scrolling combat text.

Like all of the UI modding stuff, it's fun to play around with these fonts once you know how to replace them, and I highly encourage tinkering around with them to see what you like.

And just a quick update on the UI status: I've got fully functional replacements for most addons now, although I'm still getting some library conflicts that are keeping me from posting 1.0. I will post it as soon as I have it.

Some installation help

NOTE: This post contains outdated information. Installation instructions are now included with the UI.

Now that I have a (still sort of rough) version of the UI up for download on WoWInterface, maybe some of you would like to know how to make it look like it should. The basic issue, as far as I can tell, comes from the fact that many new addons (particularly those based on the Ace3 libraries) don't start up with a sensible default configuration. I'm going to get a little technical here, but I figure that kinda goes with the territory for a custom UI discussion, so we'll just dive right in.

Most of you probably know about WoWAce and their wonderful libraries. They've made it easy for developers to create lightweight, fast addons that are skinnable and have a high degree of customizability. To keep configurations consistent between characters and servers, they use a profiling mechanism. In the old days of Ace2, most addons start off with a Default profile that's used for every character. The nice thing about this is that once you've configured an addon, you don't have to mess with it again. As you can expect, this is really helpful when you're packaging up a UI for others to use.

Well, this has changed with Ace3. Now, when you open up your UI with a new character, the addons will have created a new profile from some internal default settings. If you want the settings from another toon, you have to copy them to the new profile on the new toon.

You can, however, also simply switch the profile to Default. I think I now have a sensible Default profile for all of the addons that matter. So here's what you need to do:

Copy over the UI files as described in the README.txt file included with the UI, renaming and backing things up accordingly

When you open up your new UI for the first time, things will probably look like a mess. The first thing you should do is configure addons to use the defaults.

Hit ESC, and then click on the "Interface" button, and then the "AddOns" tab. You will now see a list with many of the addons in it. Look for the configuration parts for the following addons: Recount, ClassTimer, and Omen. Each of these should have an option called "Profiles," you may have to click the plus sign by the addon name to open up the rest of the options

For each addon listed above, do the following: click "Profiles," then click the area that shows the current profile. Switch this to "Default" in the list it gives.

Do the same for the rest of the addons I listed. You should also look at the SCT profiles, and copy over the "Daedhir-Duskwood" profile to the current one you're using.

???

Profit

Most of the stuff should be out of the way now. You should reload your UI. An easy way to do this is to Shift-Left Click the BugSack icon on the FuBar on top of the screen.

This should at least give you a default layout. Please feel free to leave a comment on this post if anything here is wrong or confusing.

DaedhirUI 0.1(.2)

Okay, folks. Come and get it. Unfortunately, it was as terrible as I had expected.

The pic is where I got it. It's almost there, but I didn't have time to zip everything up and post it. Sorry about that, I know some of you are waiting very patiently.

My guild and I are going to try raiding tonight, and after that is the Presidential debate (for those of you in the US.) I will likely have a few minutes to get something posted up late tonight, so you guys can play with it tomorrow.

It will, however, be a sort of "early adopter's" version, in that I won't provide a whole lot of instruction as to what you need to do to get it working. Turns out that many addon authors these days are doing per-character configuration by default, so creating a new toon (or getting the UI to work on a different toon) can be a hassle getting all of the mods working correctly. At this point, the biggest culprits are Recount and Dominos. I'm also contemplating switching back to Bartender4, but I want to experiment with the roll bar on Dominos before I chuck it.

Anyway, I will make another post as soon as I have the UI packaged up. And again, thanks for the interest!

DaedhirUI, by popular demand

Hi, all. I'm Daedhir, a shadow priest from the US Carebear realm Duskwood. I've been working on a custom user interface compilation for World of Warcraft, and now that the new patch is coming out in preparation for Wrath of the Lich King, I will soon (hopefully this week) be providing my UI for general use.

Thanks to WoWinsider.com for posting my UI in their thread about functional beta UIs. I had no idea I'd get the reactions that I have!

I will try to keep this blog updated with the status of my UI and with information on where you can get it. I would have posted it on my guild's website, but that kinda imploded last week, so we're still looking for web hosting. Until then, I'll try to find some hosting space where I can upload my UI.

I will also try to keep a list of what UI mods I'm using at any given time, so that we can give credit to the authors of these individual mods. And boy, do they deserve credit! Especially those at WoWAce. These people make excellent software and make little to no money for their effort.

Compilations like mine aren't possible without them, so /cheer for them whenever you can.

Here's a link to the WoWInsider article where this is featured.

I will try to post some more screenshots later this week as well, so that you can see the functionality for various different classes.

And please leave me a comment if there's anything you think could be improved!
